Executive Function Coaching

Practical systems for focus, planning, time, and follow-through

Overview

Executive functions are the brain's management system: starting tasks, holding a plan in mind, tracking time, organizing materials, shifting between demands, and regulating impulses.

When these skills lag, the result looks like laziness or carelessness from the outside and feels like drowning from the inside. Coaching treats it as a skills-and-systems problem, because that's what it is.

Coaching is skill-focused and forward-looking. It works well on its own and even better alongside therapy, ADHD treatment, or behavioral health support.

Who it's for

  • Students from middle school through graduate programs
  • Adults with ADHD — diagnosed or long suspected
  • Professionals struggling with prioritization, deadlines, or follow-through
  • Autistic clients navigating transitions and planning demands
  • Anyone whose capability and output don't match

Symptoms it helps address

  • Chronic procrastination and difficulty starting tasks
  • Missed deadlines, appointments, and forgotten commitments
  • Time blindness — consistently under- or over-estimating how long things take
  • Disorganized spaces, files, backpacks, and inboxes
  • Trouble breaking a large project into steps
  • Working long hours with little to show for it
  • Shame and avoidance built up from years of falling behind

Benefits

  • External systems that compensate for internal working-memory limits
  • Fewer missed deadlines and less last-minute crisis work
  • Realistic time estimation and planning skills
  • Improved grades, GPA stability, or workplace performance
  • Reduced conflict at home about homework and chores
  • Self-understanding that replaces the 'I'm just lazy' narrative

The treatment process

A clear path from first call to maintenance, with no step you didn't agree to.

  1. 1

    Executive function assessment

Standardized measures plus a functional interview to identify which specific skills are lagging — they're rarely all lagging equally.

  2. 2

    Goal selection

We pick two or three high-leverage targets rather than overhauling everything at once.

  3. 3

    System design

Build the calendar, capture system, workspace, and routines that fit how your brain actually operates.

  4. 4

    Weekly coaching

Short, structured sessions to review what happened, troubleshoot friction, and adjust the system.

  5. 5

    Generalization

Transfer skills to new contexts — a new semester, a new role, a new project type — and taper support.

ADHD support

Coaching complements ADHD treatment by addressing the skill gaps medication cannot teach. We work on initiation, sustained attention strategies, environment design, and the emotional side of ADHD — rejection sensitivity, shame, and the avoidance cycle.

Organization

Physical and digital systems: one capture inbox, a workable filing structure, a launch pad for daily items, and maintenance routines short enough to actually survive a busy week.

Time management

Time awareness training, time-blocking, buffer building, and honest estimation practice. We measure how long tasks actually take and recalibrate against reality.

Planning and prioritization

Breaking projects into concrete next actions, sequencing backward from deadlines, and deciding what genuinely matters this week versus what merely feels urgent.

Academic coaching

Study strategies, assignment tracking, exam preparation timelines, communicating with teachers and professors, and using accommodations effectively. Coordinated with parents for younger students and increasingly student-led with age.

Workplace productivity

Meeting and email management, protecting deep-work time, managing up, and requesting reasonable workplace accommodations under the ADA when appropriate.

Executive functioning assessments

A formal evaluation of attention, working memory, planning, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility, producing a written report with recommendations suitable for school accommodation requests and treatment planning.

Insurance & coverage

Executive function assessments and clinician-delivered sessions are frequently covered under behavioral health benefits. Coaching-only packages may be self-pay depending on your plan — we verify benefits and quote your exact cost before you commit.

Patient outcomes

We measure progress with standardized rating scales at intake and throughout care, so improvement is documented rather than assumed. Patient stories are published only with written authorization — we never fabricate testimonials.
