Vetted tools and organizations worth your time

These are external organizations and tools we consider reliable. None of them replaces individualized care, and none of them is a substitute for an evaluation.

If you are in immediate danger, use our crisis resources page or call 988 now.

National organizations

  • National Institute of Mental Health (nimh.nih.gov) — plain-language condition information grounded in research
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org) — education, peer support groups, and family programs
  • Anxiety & Depression Association of America (adaa.org) — condition guides and clinician directories
  • International OCD Foundation (iocdf.org) — ERP-focused education and provider directory
  • CHADD (chadd.org) — evidence-based ADHD resources for families and adults

Veterans and first responders

  • VA Mental Health (mentalhealth.va.gov) — benefits, programs, and treatment locators
  • Veterans Crisis Line — call 988 then press 1, or text 838255
  • Vet Centers — community-based readjustment counseling, often without VA enrollment
  • Safe Call Now and the First Responder Center for Excellence — confidential support for public safety personnel

Families, children, and schools

  • Child Mind Institute (childmind.org) — practical guides for parents on child and teen mental health
  • Understood.org — learning and attention differences, school advocacy, and accommodation guidance
  • Autism Self Advocacy Network (autisticadvocacy.org) — perspectives from autistic adults
  • Idaho Parents Unlimited — special education advocacy support for Idaho families

Screening tools

The PHQ-9 (depression), GAD-7 (anxiety), and PCL-5 (PTSD) are free, validated self-report scales widely available online. They are useful for tracking change over time and for starting a conversation with a clinician — they are screening instruments, not diagnoses.

Local and Idaho-specific

  • Idaho Careline — dial 211 for local health and human services referrals
  • Idaho Department of Health and Welfare behavioral health services
  • Regional NAMI chapters offering family education courses in North Idaho
