What to Expect at Your First Appointment

No surprises — here's exactly how the first visit goes

The first visit is a conversation, not a test. Its purpose is to understand what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what you want to be different.

Plan on 50 to 90 minutes depending on the service. You will leave with a clear picture of the recommended next step and what it will cost.

Before you arrive

  • Complete your intake paperwork online so the first session is spent talking, not writing
  • Have your insurance card and photo ID ready
  • Write down current medications, doses, and past medication trials
  • Bring relevant records: prior evaluations, school reports, discharge summaries
  • Arrive 10 minutes early for your first visit

During the visit

  • A clinician reviews your history, symptoms, and goals
  • You complete brief standardized rating scales so progress can be measured over time
  • We discuss which services fit — therapy, TMS, behavioral health, coaching, or a combination
  • You ask anything you want about approach, credentials, or expectations
  • Together we set the first goals and a session cadence

Bringing a child or teen

For minors, we usually start with caregivers for part of the session and then meet with the young person alone. We explain confidentiality rules to everyone up front — what stays private and what gets shared — so no one is surprised later. Bring school records, IEP or 504 documents, and any prior evaluations.

If you're considering TMS

The TMS consultation adds a safety screen: metal implants, seizure history, and a full review of medication trials. If you're a candidate, our benefits team begins prior authorization the same week, and treatment usually starts once approval comes back.

After the visit

  • You receive a written summary of the plan
  • We schedule your next appointments, often in a recurring block
  • Benefits verification results are communicated before you incur cost
  • With your consent, we coordinate with your primary care provider or prescriber
