ADHD

An attention-regulation difference, not a character flaw

Overview

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference in the brain systems that regulate attention, impulse control, and executive function. It is not a deficit of effort or willpower.

It shows up differently across the lifespan: visible hyperactivity in young children, disorganization and academic struggle in teens, and chronic overwhelm, missed deadlines, and burnout in adults — especially adults diagnosed late.

Common symptoms

  • Difficulty sustaining attention on non-preferred tasks
  • Distractibility and losing track mid-task
  • Chronic procrastination and trouble getting started
  • Disorganization and frequently lost items
  • Time blindness and running late
  • Impulsivity in speech, spending, or decisions
  • Restlessness or internal agitation
  • Emotional reactivity and rejection sensitivity

Causes and risk factors

  • Strong genetic and heritable component
  • Differences in dopamine and norepinephrine signaling
  • Delayed maturation of prefrontal executive networks
  • Prenatal and perinatal risk factors

How TMS fits in

TMS is not an ADHD treatment. However, many people with ADHD also carry depression, and when that depression resists medication, TMS can be appropriate. We'll be clear about which problem each treatment addresses.
